Executive Message: Ben Tyler—Finish What You Start
Years ago, my wife and I decided to remodel our basement. We hired a contractor for some things, but most of the work was done by me. I have some experience with home construction, and I kept working steadily at the different tasks we had listed out. We got the carpet laid and the walls painted and there were just a few small items like a new door or a bathroom mirror that had to be hung. We moved the furniture back downstairs and my daughter took over her room, and I kept telling myself that I would finish up the last remaining tasks the next weekend. The next weekend turned into the next, and then the next, and to this day there are still a few things that have yet to be finished.
Most of us have experienced this to some degree. We start out with a grand vision of what we want to accomplish, we pour our energy and our heart into the endeavor, and we get a lot of satisfaction at our early progress. But then we bump into an obstacle, we run out of time or we have something that diverts our attention elsewhere, and we decide to take a break, promising ourselves that we will get back to work “next weekend.”
Many of you have experienced this with your ASEA business or have seen this with others whom you lead and mentor. We work hard to qualify for an incentive trip or to take advantage of a product promotion, only to throttle back once the qualification has been met. Others begin with such high hopes and begin to progress through the leadership ranks, only to hit a wall and decide to take a break for a while. Sometimes you can almost see the opportunity sliding away through the lack of a simple weekly process of following up.
The ASEA management team has spent much of this year setting you up for success. With the new and exciting changes to the ASEA Compensation Plan and the launch of ASEA One coming early next year—not to mention the Rise to ONE incentive supporting you and your ASEA business now—you are perfectly positioned to ride the coming wave. But you can’t do it if you are not in the water and on your surfboard.
Take some time this weekend to think about your ASEA business. Are there people you have been meaning to talk to but you just keep putting it off? Are there other projects or meetings you know you should have followed up on but you just can’t seem to find the time? Make a list, set your priorities, and then begin to work on them one by one. Now is the perfect time to finish what you have started. There won’t be a better time than right now.
